EuroLeague keeps NBA door open as European basketball faces a decision
EuroLeague’s leadership remains open to talks with the NBA about possible cooperation in Europe. No completed agreement has been announced.
The debate about a new competition in European basketball has gathered momentum again. EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno said communication about possible cooperation with the NBA was continuing, while warning that rival structures could divide the basketball market.
Where the talks stand
EuroLeague clubs’ rejection of the initial cooperation proposal has not entirely removed the possibility of talks. For now, rather than an announced partnership, the parties are working on different projects.
What it means for European basketball
What catches my attention is how this discussion could extend to supporters’ viewing habits. Which teams competitions would bring together, the match calendar and continuity of competition matter as much as the excitement generated by a new name.
The real measure for European basketball’s future will be how much any new structure strengthens competition on the court. For now, the distinction between being open to talks and reaching an agreement must be maintained.
