Galatasaray 2–1 Fenerbahçe: Post-match tension cannot hide the failings

Adnan Öztürk examines Fenerbahçe’s football and the derby’s aftermath: the tension must not displace the sporting reckoning.

The 2–1 Galatasaray–Fenerbahçe derby has prompted discussion of both Fenerbahçe’s unconvincing football and the events after the final whistle. But the rising tension must not displace the examination of what happened during the match.

Galatasaray led by two goals at half-time at RAMS Park through Victor Osimhen in the 29th and 44th minutes. İrfan Can Kahveci’s 62nd-minute goal did not change the outcome.

For Fenerbahçe, the central issue goes beyond losing: why did they surrender control so readily? In a match like this, effort is only the starting point. A team must find solutions under pressure, push opponents back and impose its own plan. Fenerbahçe’s first-half performance fell short of that expectation.

One fine goal does not represent an entire performance

Fenerbahçe improved after the interval and reduced the deficit. They also had a late chance to equalise: Lemina cleared Skriniar’s header off the line. Those moments should not be ignored. Yet late pressure cannot explain away the lost first-half initiative or the inability to sustain attacking production.

Scoring and building a sound attacking structure are different things. Fenerbahçe must ask whether they repeatedly troubled their opponents through a coherent game, or depended on isolated moments and individual skill to stay alive.

My assessment is that Fenerbahçe spent more time responding to Galatasaray’s game than imposing their own. That should be the focus of criticism of a team with championship ambitions.

The scenes after the whistle excuse neither side

Abdülkerim Bardakcı and Archie Brown received red cards following the post-match confrontation. Those scenes are indefensible for both teams.

Tension, opponents’ behaviour and subsequent arguments do not invalidate criticism of Fenerbahçe’s football. Equally, winning does not exempt Galatasaray’s players from scrutiny over their conduct. Football and discipline must be examined separately.

Fenerbahçe owe their supporters more than statements about the incidents. The coaching staff and players must also explain why they spent so much of the derby playing on their opponents’ terms.

Galatasaray won the derby. Fenerbahçe’s problem is more than three lost points: it is how to change the football they failed to deliver in a major match. The noise after the whistle cannot provide that answer.
