Narrow score, big message: What Galatasaray 2-1 Fenerbahçe revealed
Control established, tested until the final whistle. Osimhen’s double won the derby for Galatasaray, but the 2-1 score leaves questions for both sides. A derby column by Barış Öztürk.
Galatasaray 2-1 Fenerbahçe. The scoreboard describes a one-goal derby. The course of the match tells us about a winner that established control yet could not relax until the end. For me, the central question is not who wanted it more: Why could one side build its game more comfortably, while the other responded so late?

THE STRUCTURE BEHIND OSIMHEN’S GOALS
At RAMS Park on 26 October 2026, Osimhen scored in the 29th and 44th minutes. Explaining both goals solely through his finishing would overlook Galatasaray’s attacking work. In his post-match remarks, Okan Buruk highlighted spacing, movement and passes between the lines. These offer stronger clues about how the victory was prepared.
A striker’s finishing gains value when the connections around him work. Barış Alper’s contribution, midfield support and Osimhen’s threat were not separate stories. Galatasaray brought those elements together in the first half. Fenerbahçe’s problem was not simply conceding twice, but failing to prevent opponents from rebuilding their attacks.
WHAT DID FENERBAHÇE’S RESPONSE CHANGE?
İsmail Kartal’s admission that the first half fell below his team’s standards is a sound starting point. Diagnosis, however, is not a solution. When winning possession does not produce a route forward, defending deep becomes little more than preparing for another opposition attack. That is where Fenerbahçe needs to look again.
İrfan Can Kahveci’s overhead kick in the 62nd minute changed the mood. With the deficit halved, an equaliser became a greater possibility. Yet staying in touch on the scoreboard is different from taking control. Galatasaray’s further chances and Ederson’s saves underline that distinction.
A QUESTION FOR THE WINNERS TOO
For Galatasaray, 2-1 carries a warning alongside a valuable victory. In a match that offered opportunities to build a bigger lead, why could one late incident still change everything? Anadolu Agency’s account of Lemina’s clearance off the line in the 90th minute makes the potential cost of missed chances clear.
The post-match tension should not eclipse the football. This derby showed Galatasaray an approach it can reproduce. It left Fenerbahçe needing to consider how to close the gap in their play before discussing the points gap. The season may be long; shortcomings will not fix themselves.
