Yunus Akgün’s Fenerbahçe derby aim: A victory for the supporters
Yunus Akgün wants to beat Fenerbahçe and give Galatasaray supporters a reason to celebrate. He sees the expectation of winning the title as a responsibility for the team.
Yunus Akgün has set his sights on victory ahead of the Fenerbahçe derby. In a beIN SPORTS interview published on 24 October, the Galatasaray player highlighted the supporters’ backing and said the team wants to win and make the club’s community happy.

Derby motivation rooted in Florya
A Galatasaray academy graduate, Akgün said he joined the club at the age of eight and made many happy memories at Florya. He explained that coming through the academy gives his derby motivation a different dimension.
Support from the stands and the title ambition
Akgün said the fans’ support carries particular significance in home derbies. He described the expectation of winning the championship as a responsibility for the players rather than pressure. He presented the opportunity to win a fifth successive title as a continuation of that ambition.
His comments contain no accusation against the opposition or attempt to stir controversy. The emphasis is on the desire to win and the connection with the supporters. They should therefore not be read as a guarantee of the result.
My view: How motivation translates onto the pitch
The emphasis on responsibility stands out most to me. A derby atmosphere can energise a team, but it can also make controlling the game harder if decisions become rushed. For Galatasaray, I will be watching how that desire shapes their reaction after losing possession and their choices in attack. Acknowledging the fans’ support matters, but the football required to win has yet to be played. The response to Yunus’s message should be judged through decisions on the pitch, rather than words alone.
